ABSTRACT

When the victory of John Major (b. 1943) for the leadership of the Conservative Party was announced, Margaret Thatcher said she was 'thrilled'. Alan Clark, reflected the view of many Conservative MPs when he wrote, John Major 'being calm and sensible, is infinitely preferable to that dreadful charlatan, H. But John is virtually unknown. He's not at all flash, and a lot of colleagues think it's flash that we need at the moment. And he's not classy, which doesn't worry me in the slightest, but worse, he doesn't (like Mrs T.) even aspire to be classy."
