ABSTRACT

Both the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition (SRM) and its monastic core, the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC), are firmly based in Japanese Soto Zen Buddhism, though there have been conscious adaptations in bringing the tradition to the West. SRM traces its origins back to two Japanese Zen Masters: Dogen (1200-53) first brought the Soto Zen tradition from China to Japan, and Keizan (1268-1325) later adapted the practice to Japanese customs, also founding Sojiji monastery, where the SRM founder would train over six centuries later.
