ABSTRACT

This case is a comprehensive look at the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) during the first ten years of Christian Haub’s leadership as CEO. The case is presented primarily with a timeline and uses the five foci approach to discuss where Haub placed his attention in strategic planning and implementation. The case is comprehensive as it deals with a large complex organization in the fast-changing environment of the retail food industry in North America. A&P is a part of the Tengelmann Group, a large European food retailer in Germany. Much of the case is presented through Haub’s own narrative.
