Before urbanization, our ancestors used to range over the land, gathering plant foods and hunting terrestrial animals, birds and the fish from rivers, lakes or sea. Some of the spoils were eaten on the spot but much was brought home and usually cooked before eating. Plant extracts and fermented brews were also developed. Heavy crops of nuts or fruit and big game might have been shared within the larger group.
