ABSTRACT
Soils are extremely complex four-dimensional (x, y, z, t) materials in their constituent components, initial stress state, wide-ranging stiffness, strength, flow characteristics, and rheological behavior. Yet, they must be characterized adequately and properly before any new foundation, embankment, tunnel, or excavation is constructed on or within the ground.
