ABSTRACT

This chapter is by way of being a set of personal observations from limited experience; they do not amount to anything as grand as a research agenda for others to follow, rather a commentary on episodic involvement through a number of East European contacts, bolstered by related reading. The background is no more than a simple curiosity about cities in Europe as a whole: their appearance, why they have taken their present form, and the post-war urban changes, both environmental and societal.
