ABSTRACT
The main concern of this chapter is Gypsy ethnicity and economic exchange. It describes the Gypsies’ special economic niche, showing also why it is more appropriate to refer to economic exchange than to ‘work’, which in an industrial capitalist system is closely associated with wage-labour.
