ABSTRACT

The term apxivnaonioxr]^ appears only in Plutarch (Eum. 1. 6), where the Aiakid Neoptolemos is so described. Berve concludes (i 128): 'Der offizielle Titel des Kommandeurs lautete, wenigstens in den letzten Jahren, scheinbar dp%u>rcao7uoTr|<;...'. If this terminology is correct, Neoptolemos was, in all likelihood, the successor of Parmenion’s son, Nikanor (whom Arr. 3. 25. 4 calls o xSv i>naGn\Gx&v ap%cov), and commander of the hypaspists from 330 until 323.
