ABSTRACT

This article does not aim to describe in detail the nature of the voluntary sector in other European countries: the literature on this is already too large, even in English, for such a review, and the development of quantitative studies is too rapid at present for any survey to be anything other than out of date by the time it reaches the press. A bibliography is provided at the end of the chapter listing suggested further reading, but is limited to works in English that are reasonably readily available.
