ABSTRACT
In the last decade there has been growing concern that major changes in the global climate will be caused by a build-up of heat-trapping pollutants in the atmosphere. Though the magnitude, timing and socio-economic impacts of these changes are at present highly uncertain, the mechanism linking climate and polluting gases unambiguously exists because the current mild temperatures on the earth are maintained by a naturally existing layer of these ‘greenhouse gases’.
