ABSTRACT

The previous chapter documented extensive mobility between different labour market divisions. But how was this mobility achieved? What were the career paths that carried people towards highly skilled factory jobs rather than unskilled street peddling? What were the mechanisms through which people charted these trajectories? This chapter provides an analysis of these patterns of movement, based on the case studies. The objective is to indicate how these careers were structured, how the passage from one job to another was achieved and in what ways they differed for men and women. We are also interested in the extent of diversity experienced personally by individuals, because of its implications for the development of class consciousness.
