ABSTRACT

This commentary provides an overview of the issues raised in group and open discussion during the Competency Based Learning Symposium.

Following tradition, discussions varied in the degree to which they directly addressed the topics raised in the formal presentations and the tasks presented to the working groups. However, whether oblique or coincident, the tenor and content of contributions during discussion reflected a perception shared by symposium members: that current developments in competency based learning are not whim or fashion, and will have a direct or indirect impact on Higher Education irrespective of whether it develops a specific policy response to those developments.
