ABSTRACT
A common assumption among Western or Western-trained development planners is that the problems of women in developing countries are attributable to their ‘status’ in traditional society.1 Hence the emphasis in the United Nations and similar organizations on ‘raising the status of women’ by involving them in development, often through special programs and projects.
