ABSTRACT
The authority and originality with which museums approach their collections help build their integrity as public institutions. We are learning all the time about the different approaches which might be adopted and the new questions which might be asked. The field of material culture within museum studies is alerting us to theoretical propositions that stand to enliven and reinvigorate museum practice, and in turn offer something to the public which has considerable depth of interest.
