ABSTRACT
At the end of 1988, a survey was undertaken of the salaries paid to museum and gallery staff in the UK. Regrettably the survey had only a 25 per cent response rate, which inevitably affected the conclusions which could be drawn. However, the broad picture of underpayment and considerable pay disparity is one that museum staff will recognize. This survey is now rather dated, but it is unlikely that the general features it reveals have changed a great deal.
