ABSTRACT

Greater attention to the understanding of the museum workforce demonstrates the inequalities to be found within it. In many respects, these reflect the inequalities within society as a whole. However, this cannot be a licence for their perpetuation within museum work, especially if the greater democratization of museum provision is a genuine goal. The commitment to change is prompting many museums to reassess thoroughly their policies and approaches. Further, the Museums Association has undertaken research on equal opportunities in museums, from which proposals for change are being made.
