ABSTRACT
At the same conference at which Neil Cossons gave the previous paper, Neil MacGregor, Director of the National Gallery, London, questioned the importance of scholarship in relation to the service offered to the public. MacGregor repudiates the polarity of view about sholarship in museums and looks at its positive contribution to the work and ambitions of the National Gallery.
