ABSTRACT
In the last chapter I argued that informal rules play an important part in enabling teachers to make use of complex and internally contradictory systems of official rules. However, informal rules also have a significance beyond this. I begin this chapter by providing more elaborate descriptions of informal rules and further developing explanations of how they operate.
