ABSTRACT
I am currently in the final stages of writing up my thesis, and so this is possibly not the best time to write a balanced view of my experiences because my mood varies from simple pessimism to abject despair! Nevertheless, in looking back over my time as a research student I have come to the conclusion that it was all worthwhile, that the good times far outweighed the bad, and that most importantly I have enjoyed it.
