ABSTRACT

Of all the resources critical to museum operations, space is perhaps the least understood. Consequently, it tends to be poorly managed. Poor management causes considerable trauma to staff, damage to collections, and significant waste of other such critical resources as finances and staff time. Space is money. It should be controlled accurately and cost-effectively with the rigorous attention that is demanded by modern accounting principles. Space is also power. It represents personal position, prestige and job security. It is reflective of an organization’s personnel structure. Personal work space and parking space are perhaps a staff member’s most precious possessions, next to salary ranking.
