ABSTRACT

Finding more space while retaining easy access to collections is a dual challenge every collections manager faces. At the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., the graphic arts department found that a high-density storage system was the best solution to our specific set of problems. But the decision to install the high-density system was not made in haste; it was the result of a thorough assessment of collections management and curatorial needs. So before I address the details of our buying decision, let me explain a bit about the process we followed.
