ABSTRACT
Scottish educational policy-making is relatively independent of that in the rest of the United Kingdom. This chapter traces the development of that autonomy since the middle of the twentieth century, looks at the tensions between Scottish and United Kingdom policy-making that have grown since 1979, and speculates about possible directions in which Scottish educational policy-making might move over the next few decades. The main attention here is to the school sector.
