ABSTRACT

We have made the connection between elements of scripted fantasy and parts of the personality. For subject areas, like Personal and Social Education, that aim to deal specifically with notions of self-identity and interpersonal relationships, the use of scripted fantasy can make an important contribution to that understanding of the self. The methodology differs quite radically from programmes of PSE that we have sometimes seen in operation in schools: page after page of photocopied material, hurriedly assembled, with little apparent understanding of the deeper psychological processes underlying an exploration of the self. This is not to criticise an already overburdened, overstressed and highly dedicated group of professionals but to offer instead a technique for both the teacher and student which employs a more creative approach to self awareness.
