ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the installation, operation and supervision of compressed air works for the construction of shafts and tunnels in the water-bearing sands of Cairo. The paper covers the plant installations, health and safety, training and general operations and provides information on the numbers of decompressions and details of decompression sickness, etc. The paper shows the different ways in which compressed air was used to carry out the construction work and the effect of the compressed air on the surrounding areas: it also shows how the contractor changed methods to limit the use of compressed air on the latest contract.
