ABSTRACT
This paper considers the pre-estimation of compressed air losses or consumption for tunnels driven in soft ground. Causes of air consumption are discussed and empirical methods of forecasting are compared with theoretical methods. The importance of permeability and the influence of other factors which can introduce errors in estimation are discussed. Some recent case histories are described and tentative conclusions and recommendations are given.
