ABSTRACT

At two caisson construction sites, under the medical supervision of the authors, several cases of Type I decompression sickness occurred, notwithstanding the regular observance of working hours and decompression periods as established by the German employers’ liability insurance associated table. Working pressures were up to nearly 4 bar absolute. 4% of all man decompressions on construction site 1 (15 cases out of 375 man decompressions), and 5.5% of all man decompressions on site 2 (10 cases of 182 man decompressions) were affected. The possible causes of these problems are examined in this paper.
