ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the results of a study which brings together for the first time research on school-level environment and teacher-student relationships in the classroom. The study was conducted in seven schools in Tasmania and Western Australia in which forty-six teachers provided perceptions of their school-level environments and 792 students on their classroom environments. In order to assess these perceptions two questionnaires were used, the School Level Environment Questionnaire (SLEQ) and the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI). This chapter describes the first use of the QTI in Australia. It begins with comments on the distinction between school-level and classroom environment, and then describes assessment of school environment, the development, validation and use of the SLEQ, interpersonal behavior of teachers in the classroom and the use of the QTI. The chapter concludes with a discussion of some relationships between the scores on the two instruments.
