ABSTRACT

No advice was given to local planning authorities about the purpose of listing or what account should be taken of buildings of architectural or historic interest in the course of preparing the new development plans or in the exercise of development control. Presumably it was thought that, as the Minister had to be notified of any proposal to alter or demolish a listed building, adequate control could be exercised centrally by the Ministry, without the need to promulgate any general guidelines to local planning authorities.
