ABSTRACT
In November 1981 the Conservative government published a consultation paper Organisation of Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings in England.1 It was an early example of what would come to be recognized as the classic Thatcherite style. It deserves to be remembered on that account as much as for the proposals themselves.
