ABSTRACT

This book sets out to explore two questions: the position of women pioneers in the settlement of new lands and the methodological difficulties of such a study. We shall therefore describe different ways of understanding the problems of women pioneers. We use a literature review (Chapter Two), questionnaire surveys (Chapters Three and Four) and life stories (Chapter Five and Seven to Eleven), in order to give different perspectives both on the women’s lives and on the advantages and disadvantages of various research methods and objectives. In Chapter Six, we report on the position of women pioneers and seek solutions.
