ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the changing gender division of labour and its role in reshaping livelihoods in Europe. First, what of men’s loss of position in the labour market and the new processes bringing women into paid work? Second, is there any lessening of women’s segregation by sector, occupation or income? Finally, are there causal relationships between women’s expanded role in the workforce, the growth of non-conventional jobs and the overall flexibilisation of the economy?
