ABSTRACT

All our futures in the EU are intrinsically bound up with continuing problems of unemployment and of the quality of jobs. We do not yet have an alternative to high levels of employment in paid work to meet our psycho-logical needs and to distribute wealth in our society. We can produce considerable wealth, but without jobs this will leave many in poverty, deprivation and social exclusion. What then can be done, through Euro¬ pean, regional and place-specific policies, to alleviate these problems in the short and medium term? The long term will depend on a new kind of society.
