In the mid-1950s, Unesco undertook the task of investigating the state of the social sciences in a number of its member states, with the aim of showing ways of possible improvement in the relationship between scientific research and economic growth in those countries. The report on Greece, written by Professor Pierre de Bie, of the University of Leuven, Belgium, is a document written with caution and care.
