ABSTRACT
After looking at the history and basic principles of the German welfare state, this chapter considers three issues which are bringing changes in social provision in Germany. These are (1) the effects of Unification, with particular reference to women, (2) the demographic changes since the inception of the welfare state, and (3) the advent of the global economy and its influence on employment in Germany. Finally a brief look will be taken at suggestions for possible reform.
