ABSTRACT

The limbic system is the name given to a complex assemblage of neural centres and their communicating pathways. It is situated at the base of the cerebral cortex and can be partly seen on the medial side of a midline section of the cerebrum (Figures 4.4 and 5.1). It will be the thesis of this chapter that the limbic system plays a key role in the evolutionary survival and eventual success of hominids. A detailed account of the anatomy is not required for our evolutionary story. Reference may be made to Brodal (1981) and Isaacson (1974) for a full account.
