For many aging women, osteoporosis has become the focus of intense fear and is associated with an image of inevitable disability and dependence. Although osteoporosis is a serious and potentially debilitating disease, the scholarly research, as well as the mass media, is characterized by sensationalistic interpretation of poor quality research and biological reductionism. The popular myth portrays osteoporosis as a crippling, degenerative disease caused by menopause and cured by hormone therapy. The goals of the discussion below are to dispel some of these myths, delineate the major determinants of osteoporosis, examine controversial issues, and describe methods of prevention and treatment.
