ABSTRACT
The biggest difference of them all embodies two truths about the dynamics of difference in desire. First, two things marked out as being different are never equal. One of them inevitably defines the other. We may draw the line down the middle, but what lies to the left of that line is more important than what lies to the right. What comes first predicts what comes second. What lies to the left of the line is, we might say, the radical of difference. It defines the standard against which whatever comes next is different.1
