ABSTRACT
We began this book in ancient Athens, passed through nineteenth-century Paris and the fin de siècle Salpêtrière, through the Sonnenstein Asylum in Saxony and returned to Britain at the end of the twentieth century. So now we know what ‘hearing voices’ really is. Or do we? This depends on what kind of knowledge is sought.
