ABSTRACT
In everyday language we talk about nerves as though each were a single unit of the nervous system. This is not, in fact, the case. A nerve, or nerve fibre, is a collection of a large number of more basic units called neurons. For example, the nerve that supplies the little finger with movement is made up of many hundreds of neurons. In this chapter we will explore what a neuron consists of and how it functions.
