ABSTRACT

In a period of eighteen months, the Julio-Claudian dynasty had been brought to a violent end and the power of the army and its commanders had reasserted itself as a political force; during this time there had been serious talk of the dangers of dynastic government, and yet the period had finished with the triumph of Vespasian and the opening of a new dynasty.
