ABSTRACT

Bombay City is a place that has internationally known problems. It has grown fast, continues to grow fast and has not been able to deal with its growth. As far as the growth of the population is concerned, it is a city that seems to have turned its face away from migrants who have created an informal city, what S.P.Modi calls the “unintended city”. Yet if you look at Bombay, you can say nothing without the opposite being equally true. It is enormously wealthy. It accounts for nearly 40% of the nation’s income from excise duty and taxes. It accounts for half the country’s import and export trade. “If Bombay fails, India will fail”.
