ABSTRACT
What is physical abuse? Which is to ask: where is the boundary between legitimate and illegitimate violence towards children? By whom and in what contexts is it permissible to hit children? At the time of writing, the cases of a police officer and a child minder, who had slapped an adolescent and a preschool child respectively, have attracted a great deal of popular support and, in the end, a lenient official response.
