ABSTRACT

This chapter will review some of the major trends in accident patterns, especially pedestrian accidents, as they relate to children. We shall consider what they can tell us about the causes of such accidents; then move on to discuss what might be done to prevent them, focusing especially on what education might have to offer the child. Chapter 7 examines the effectiveness of current educational provision and how this might be improved. We shall pay particular attention to recent research suggesting that some fundamental changes are

needed in how to approach this problem if children are to be given a better chance of survival on the roads.
