ABSTRACT

The forenamed students and masters that were at his death have obtained so much that they buried him in the village where he was so grievously tormented.

4. DATE OF THE PLAY

The earliest known copy of the Damnable Life was published in the latter half of 1592. There had probably been an earlier edition than that which it alone represents, but the evidence of a dispute in 1592 regarding the ownership of the copyright is such as to make it likely that this earlier edition had appeared as recently as in the spring of the same year. Marlowe was killed in May 1593. So it seems that, unless he had had access to the manuscript of the Damnable Life, he must have written Doctor Faustus during the twelve months or so prior to his death.
