ABSTRACT

Jean-Claude Gallotta, enigmatic poet, philosopher and ‘auteur’ of the nouvelle danse in France, has been called ‘the most controversial, loved, hated and wooed choreographer in France today’ (L’Unità, October 1986). Perhaps it is dangerous to talk about any choreographer in terms of superlatives. However, certain aspects of the quotation deserve consideration in the light of Gallotta’s artistic output and his role in contemporary French dance.
