ABSTRACT

When the Houston Grand Opera presented the premiere of Meredith Monk’s opera Atlas in 1991, many of the varied aspects of her career were brought together: here was a largescale work of musical theatre for which Monk had prepared the scenario, organized the text, composed the music and movement, and overseen the production, in addition to singing the leading role. Indeed, the only major aspect of her work that wasn’t prominently represented was filmmaking.
