ABSTRACT

In Chapter 8 it was stressed that, though talking and listening to others are natural, effortless activities to most people, analysis from a psychological point of view reveals a complexity and diversity of component processes. These include sound and word identification, production of complex sound patterns, accessing intricate networks of word meanings, comprehension processes and, in addition, personal-social considerations. Language is closely involved in problem-solving and thought as well as in communicating with others.
