ABSTRACT

Broderick’s promotional remarks were made in the context of introducing the Back of Beyond festival of Australian cinema which he curated in Los Angeles in 1988. Australian cinema is a diverse cinema and television made of projects with little in common. It is a family of rivalrous, complementary and disconnected film-making projects. Feature film-making, television drama, documentary, short film and experimental projects compete with each other for the public’s attention, a slice of government funds and critical scrutiny. These several film forms also provide for a wellrounded film-making milieu and film appreciation culture.
