ABSTRACT

The SCNI survey was commissioned by the Sports Council for Northern Ireland (SCNI) in November 1992, the aim of the research being to establish baseline information on young people’s degree of involvement in sport and physical recreation, and to improve understanding of the processes and factors affecting that involvement. The definition of sport adopted by the SCNI was inclusive and consistent with that set out in the Council of Europe ‘Sport for All’ Charter which identifies four categories:

Competitive games and sports (for example, netball, hockey, soccer)

Outdoor and adventure activities (for example climbing)

Aesthetic movement (for example dance, figure skating)

Conditioning activity (for example weight training, aerobics)
