ABSTRACT

So far in this book we have identified some of the ways in which people learn about politics and thus how they take on political identities. We have also looked at the ways in which they take part in political activity, or why they may be politically inactive. At least implicit in much of this discussion is the sense that while individuals are not free agents in influencing how they live, neither are they slavish followers of fashion and circumstance, nor simply moulded by larger social and political forces.
